How to Ensure the Safety of the Automatic Revolving Doors?

    18.09.2023

A revolving door is an ideal choice of entry and exit for buildings with high aesthetic requirements, such as hotels and large high-grade shopping malls.

Besides the comfort and safety of people moving in & out, a revolving door can reduce noise, dust, and energy consumption by isolating indoor and outdoor environments with its “Always Open, Always Close” feature. It can also help with controlling the flow of people effectively when the crowd is relatively large in some scenarios, like the entrance of a hotel.

Aesthetic and convenience are very important, but the safety of pedestrians is even more critical and should be valued by all the stakeholders of the buildings.

I have seen a boy (whose mom walking behind may not notice the child’s dangerous behavior due to a phone call) move quickly and stops quickly in the revolving door area at the entrance of Livat, a super shopping center in Beijing. Thanks to the safety sensor installed, the boy does not get hurt by the door. We can imagine that without proper safety protection measures, the kids may be hit by the door leaf or crushed between the fixed door frame and the moving door leaves. So the ‘Big Toy’ for the kids can be dangerous and cause severe injuries to innocent pedestrians, especially the elderly, children, and people with reduced mobility.

We all know that the danger zones vary for different types of doors, we have shared the danger zones of sliding doors and swing doors and how to secure their danger zones in the previous (below) articles:

Here in this article, we would like to share the danger zones of automatic revolving doors and how to ensure the safety of this type of door to avoid any severe injuries.

The danger zones of automatic revolving doors.

A typical revolving door has several potential danger zones like the closing edge and the moving door leaves. Safety sensors should be installed on top of the moving door leaf, in the pinch zone area…etc., to secure the danger zones and reduce the risk of an incident.

In this article, we aim to share the major danger zones of an automatic revolving door and how to secure them. For more detailed information, you may always refer to the related standards such as EN16005 in Europe, GB standards in China, AS standards in Australia, etc.”

Let’s take a three-leaf revolving door as an example!

Main Danger Areas of Revolving Doors

The main danger area of a three-leaf revolving door is the 500mm area between the front vertical stile and the right door frame and also the 200mm area on both sides of the front vertical stile.

The safety of the above area should be secured. Without proper safety sensors, crushing of the head, trunk, arms, hands, feet, legs, and shearing of hands, arms, feet, and legs may occur.

Secondary Danger Areas of Revolving Doors

The revolving door’s secondary danger area is a 200mm zone in front of the leading door leaf.

The safety of the secondary danger area should be secured as well. A security incident may occur, including crushing hands, feet, shearing hands, and contact with the body without proper safety sensors.

Besides the danger zones mentioned above, the revolving doors in residential and commercial projects are getting higher and higher, and the requirements for the safety performance of the sensor are also getting higher and higher. Thanks to the sensor manufacturers like BEA, we can equip the doors with appropriate safety sensors and make the overall ‘tall’ revolving doors safer.

How to Ensure the Safety of the Automatic Revolving Doors?

As a leading player in the automatic door industry since 1965, BEA has plenty of mature automatic door activation and safety solutions for revolving doors.

Safety Sensor Solution to Protect Users from Contact with the Moving Door Leaves.

BEA’s revolving door leaf safety protection sensors mainly use laser and active infrared technologies to provide different levels of door leaf area protection for the revolving doors.

The door leaf safety protection sensor using laser technology can cover the entire door with only a single sensor module, effectively detecting persons or objects in front of the door leaves to avoid any contact. In addition, thanks to the high-precision laser detection technology, the uncovered zone can be reduced to even 10cm compared to 20cm on IR, which is very helpful for foot protection and pets moving in and out of doors. The Laser technology also guarantees the independence of all types of flooring and the environment of the door.

The door safety sensor using active infrared technology is a distance measurement sensor. Users can realize the complete coverage safety protection of the door leaf by configuring multiple modules. In addition, the user can set the height of the uncovered zone through the knob to meet the safety protection needs of different scenarios.

Safety Sensor Solutions to Secure the Revolving Door’s Closing Edge/Pinch Zone.

BEA laser and active infrared sensors can also provide various levels of safety to the pinch zone of revolving doors.

The laser sensor uses time-of-flight measurement technology to effectively cover the entire pinch zone, providing precise safety protection for pedestrians during the closing process. In addition, the high-precision laser technology can keep the uncovered zone within 6cm, and thanks to time-of-flight laser technology, the laser sensors can be installed in any environment.

Using active infrared technology, the infrared sensors detect people and objects in the pinch zone area through one or two infrared curtains to protect pedestrians from getting hurt when passing through the revolving door.
