When asked why laser sensors technology, below is what Mr. Sandeep Pawar, Managing Director of Kent ITS, said about why the company opted for the laser senser over the light curtain on RGSL, Mumbai tollway.
- Laser sensors enable the complete coverage of the detection field, leading to the efficient detection of all types of vehicles especially long vehicles and multi-axle trailers.
- Laser sensors are able to detect vehicles moving at different speeds, which improves the automation, safety and traffic flow.
- The accuracy with laser is 100% as compared to curtain, which goes till 80% only cause of the profile of the vehicles in India.
- Laser sensors are much smaller in size and much easier to transport and install as compared to light curtains.
With increasing number of vehicles detected and scanned during a particular interval of time, especially during rush hours. KENT had earlier used the light curtain for the required purposes, but they were not able to attain the desired efficiency especially during foul weather conditions like fog, rain, and dim lights during nights.
With the laser sensors from BEA, the number of vehicles detected during rush hours has been tripled compared to its earlier value, which helps them to reduce traffic congestion with high efficiency. As per the statics, while with the light curtains 322 vehicles have been processed between 7 PM -8 PM, whereas with the laser sensors installed the number of vehicles processed during the same duration was 966. Similarly, the 316 vehicles crossed between 9 PM -10 PM as compared to 153 with the previous system installed, giving the enhancement of 106%.
To conclude, laser sensors is a good replacement of light curtains because:
- Reliable and more accurate detection, background or substrate has almost no effect on measurements.
- No detection distance blind area, and no external illumination of target object
- Installation and use flexibility, and high immunity to environment disturbances.
